Kenyan Canadian Association (KCA) held the inaugural International Women’s Day Workshop & Celebration Dinner on March 11, 2023, in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. The colourful event was grace by invited local and international dignitaries and special guests.

The Chief Guest was The Spouse of The Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya H.E. Pastor Dr. Dorcas Rigathi EGH, who received an award from KCA for championing Gender Equality and the plight of the Boy Child. H.E. Pastor Dr. Dorcas Rigathi was welcomed to the City by His Worship Patrick Brown, The Mayor of Brampton.

She was accompanied to the event by Kenya High Commissioner to Canada H.E. Amb. Immaculate Wambua and Kenya Honorary Consul in Toronto Mr. Sunir Chandaria. Other Canadian Political Leaders who graced the event include Brampton North MP Hon. Ruby Sahota, MPP of Brampton Centre and Ontario Minister of Women’s Social and Economic Opportunity. Hon. Charmaine Williams and Brampton North MPP Hon. Graham McGregor.

The elegant event was organized by KCA through Women & Gender Affairs Program headed by Jackie Kariuki. Speaking at the dinner, KCA President & Executive Director Ephraim Mwaura, urged the women to continue working towards addressing Gender-based Violence and Gender Equality by leveraging current innovation and technology in line with 2023 United Nations theme of “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality”.

The workshop was made possible through generous support of donors, sponsors and partners including Canadian Women’s Foundation, WES Mariam Assefa Fund, Network for the Advancement of Black Communities (NABC), Heart Lake Run, PHusion Global, World Remit and African Canadian Social Development Council (ACSDC).

I will begin by indicating that the African Canadian Social Development Council is an inclusive organization that welcomes and respects everyone.

On April 7th, 2023, I received a hateful e-mail which was also copied to about one hundred and fifty (150) friends of ACSDC. In fact, we, the leader­ ship of ACSDC, found the whole thing despicable and had nothing to do with it.

I have decided to write on this particular subject, even after my leaders have condemned it, due to a response made by one person, the Executive Director (ED) of one of our leading agencies here in Ontario. This person quickly pointed accusing fingers at the African Canadian Social Development Council (ACSDC) as the perpetrator of this hateful message and further announced the intention to report ACSDC to funders.

ACSDC was registered in 2002 with a current membership of eighty-seven(87) organizations.
