Since 1981, the Ethiopian Association in the Greater Toronto Area and Surrounding Region (EAGTA SR) has been a pillar of support for the Ethiopian-Canadian community. As a non-profit, community-based organization, EAGTA SR is dedicated to empowering individuals and families through a wide range of culturally responsive services and programs.
At the heart of the Association's mission is a commitment to fostering inclusion, resilience, and a strong sense of belonging. Through its work, EAGTA SR envisions a thriving Ethiopian-Canadian community that not only preserves its rich cultural heritage but also contributes meaningfully to the fabric of Canadian society.
Over the past year, more than 2,600 individuals have benefited from the Association's weekly educational seminars, which address vital topics such as employment, housing, financial literacy, legal rights, and mental health. The organization also provides timely crisis response support, offering assistance in situations involving mental health, wellness, and domestic issues.
EAGTA SR's biweekly Seniors' Club brings together over 70 community members for social activities, reading, games, and gentle physical exercise, creating a vibrant and supportive space for older adults. For newcomers, the Association offers comprehensive settlement and referral services, including orientation, language support, and connections to employment and housing resources.
Cultural celebration is a cornerstone of EAGTA SR's work. Through events like Ethiopian Day and Adwa Victory Day, the organization promotes cultural pride and fosters intergenerational connections within the community. In addition, as a Sponsorship Agreement Holder with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), EAGTA SR plays a key role in the resettlement of refugees, ensuring newcomers are welcomed with dignity and compassion.
With decades of service and a deep-rooted connection to the community, the Ethiopian Association in the GTA continues to uplift, unite, and inspire.1811mpacint Action: In response to a surge of Ethiopian newcomers in 2022-2023, many of whom faced homelessness, EAGTA SR provided emergency shelter, meals, and one-on-one support. Thanks to our crisis response and settlement programs, many of these individuals are now housed, employed, and thriving in their new communities. This work continues as we advocate for systemic change and support equitable outcomes for newcomers of African origin.
Our impact is amplified through strong partnerships with organizations like TAIBU Community Health Centre, WoodGreen Community Services, United Way Greater Toronto, Ethio-Can BridgeTheGap, and the City of Toronto.
Community Highlights from the Ethiopian Association in the GTA Ethiopian Day 2024 was a tremendous success, drawing over 5,000 attendees in a vibrant celebration of culture, unity, and community pride. The Association also launched its newly redesigned, ETHIOPIAN ASSOCIATION, website to explore programs, services, and upcoming events.
