La Passerelle-I.D.E. was founded in 1992 by Leonie Tchatat who arrived in Canada from the Cameroon at the age of 16. Leonie identified very early on a gap in services in Ontario needed to respond to the challenges, obstacles and barriers related to the economic, social integration and inclusion of Black francophone immigrants in Toronto. As a young Francophone immigrant, Leonie understood first-hand that the unemployment, underemployment and precarious employment of new French-speaking immigrants represented a huge opportunity cost for the province and the country.

La Passerelle-I.D.E.

La Passerelle-1.D.E. is a Black-governed, Black-led, Black-focused agency which delivers culturally adapted services needed by the francophone community in Ontario, including::

  • Cultural competency training: Bi-directional training, recognized as a best practice by the governments of Canada for over 15 years. This training is a catalyst for tangible change for newcomers who want to settle in Canada. It also benefits institutions and also offers a certificate.
  • Housing support: Personalized and culturally adapted support with our social workers to help black and racialized Francophones who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless find housing and stability.
  • IKUEN - intercultural kitchen: La Passerelle-1.D.E.'s flagship program for more than 20 years, IKUEN cooking workshops are interactive, free and offered by experienced chefs. The program allows participants to break isolation, socialize, network and learn how to better integrate into the host society.
  • Financial literacy: Through this program, we equip immigrants and refugees with the necessary knowledge about the Canadian and Ontario financial systems, helping them make informed decisions for a stable and prosperous financial life.
  • Cafe branding: This service offers the essential means to develop a personal brand in the Canadian context. Through interactive workshops, we help immigrants and refugees showcase their skills and talents, opening the way to new professional opportunities.
  • Conference lunch: A unique platform where immigrants and refugess have the opportunity to meet employers of all levels, over a meal. These informal meetings allow individual interviews, thus promoting job opportunities and strengthening links between talents and employers, for successful professional integration.
  • English Cafe: A dynamic space where immigrants and refugees can improve their English skills. Through interactive and engaging sessions, we provide support towards fluid and effective communication in a predominantly English-speaking environment.
  • Rapid Response: This program is designed to provide immediate assistance to the most vulnerable members of our community and to provide an immediate response to the basic needs of African refugees who are unhoused and at risk of harm within 24 to 48 hours future. It aims to respond quickly to situations where safety and well-being are seriously threatened, ensuring rapid intervention and support.
